American vs European Roulette Wheels

By Austin Green

Anyone who’s new to roulette might assume that there is only one kind of Rouette wheel. In fact, when I first started learning about the game, I used to think that the numbers on a roulette wheel were printed in order around the wheel! But you live and you learn, and I learned that the numbers were actually arranged for the perfect random game when the ball was thrown.

The basic structure of the Roulette wheel is the same across the world: a circular wheel with 36 numbers printed randomly around it, and of course the colours black and red alternating across the wheel.

The European wheel has a single green zero, which represents the house edge. This was the original design of the Roulette wheel (sometimes called the French wheel) and it had a lower house edge than the later evolution, the American wheel. The American wheel has a higher house edge because it  has a single zero and a double zero slot, making the house edge higher. Outside bets all lose when the ball lands on zero, making the zero the house’s favourite slot.

We recommend you stick with the French or European Roulette wheels if you want to win more often!
